SeeTang Collection: A Sustainable Biodesign Solution for Marine Conservation

Raising Awareness and Reducing Plastic Pollution

The SeeTang Collection, designed by Jana-Aimee Wiesenberger, is a groundbreaking biomaterial invention that aims to raise awareness about marine conservation and combat plastic pollution in the fashion and packaging industries. Inspired by the important role of microalgae and macroalgae in maintaining the health of our planet, SeeTang offers biodegradable alternatives to plastic-polluted food packaging and single-use grocery bags.

The uniqueness of the SeeTang Collection lies in its sustainable approach and focus on marine conservation. The packaging of the instant dish is designed to be cooked alongside the main ingredients, as the biomaterial is edible and dissolvable in water. This innovative solution eliminates the need for separate disposal and reduces waste. The outer packaging is either recyclable or can be composted, further minimizing its environmental impact.

In the fashion collection, the biomaterial used in SeeTang is infused with saffron dye, inspired by the grocery store Sainsbury's. This vibrant color not only adds visual appeal but also serves as a reminder of the importance of sustainable alternatives to plastic bags. The bags and jewelry in the collection are made from the same biopolymer as the instant dish and are 100 percent compostable, ensuring durability and longevity while remaining environmentally friendly.

The realization of the SeeTang Collection involves the sourcing of biomaterials from the sea, emphasizing their significance in combating climate change and preserving our planet. The bioplastic is made from algae and dyed with natural colors extracted from avocado skin and stone, onion skin, hibiscus, coffee, and saffron. The production process of SeeTang is a zero-waste endeavor, aligning with its commitment to sustainability.

Technical specifications for the SeeTang Collection include dimensions for the instant dish (15cm x 2cm x 15cm), handbag #1 (24cm x 5cm x 29cm), small bag #2 (20cm x 5cm x 17cm), and instant dish bag (19cm x 0.5cm x 31cm). These specifications ensure functionality and practicality while maintaining the design's aesthetic appeal.

Through extensive research and experimentation, Jana-Aimee Wiesenberger developed the SeeTang Collection, drawing on her Level 3 Diploma in Marine Biology and conversations with seaweed harvesters in the UK. The project presented creative and technical challenges, including accepting the unique attributes of the biomaterial and working within limited manufacturing facilities due to COVID-19 restrictions. Despite these obstacles, the SeeTang Collection emerged as a testament to innovation and sustainability.

The SeeTang Collection has been recognized for its outstanding design and contribution to sustainable practices. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects, and Green Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the creativity and resourcefulness of the design, as well as its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The SeeTang Collection exemplifies the potential for design to improve quality of life and make a positive impact on the world.

With its focus on marine conservation and commitment to sustainability, the SeeTang Collection stands as a beacon of hope in the fight against plastic pollution. By offering biodegradable alternatives to plastic packaging and fashion items, it paves the way for a more environmentally conscious future.
